JOAN RETALLACK – John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Humanities at Bard College

Joan Retallack's Procedural Elegies  / Western Civ Cont’d / was named a best book of 2010 by ARTFORUM. She is the author of eight books of poetry and a number of critical volumes including The Poethical Wager and MUSICAGE: John Cage in Conversation with Joan Retallack which received the 1996 America Award in Belles-Lettres. Retallack has received a Lannan poetry award, and NEA funding for an Artist’s Book project. She has performed in and served as dramaturge for Cage productions, most recently Lecture on the Weather, and James Joyce, Marcel Duchamp, Erik Satie: An Alphabet in which she played the role of Buckminster Fuller. Her numerous essays on Cage’s work give particular attention to the relation of his experimental attitude to 20th century science, poetics, utopian aesthetics, and global socio-politics. Retallack is John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Humanities at Bard College.
